  • Drivers are required by law to notify Transport Victoria Medical Review of any serious, permanent or long term illness, disability, medical condition or injury that may affect their fitness to drive. Diabetes is one of these conditions.

The main concern about driving and diabetes is the potential for an unexpected severe hypoglycaemic (low blood sugar) event. This may result in loss of consciousness or seizure activity, causing risk to yourself and others.

Commercial or heavy vehicle licences in patients using glucose-lowering therapies require an annual review. Private licences require reports every two to five years, depending on their treatment regime.

We are happy to provide medical clearance in patients with diabetes, provided we have sufficient data to demonstrate stable and safe glucose levels. Patients are advised to bring in their glucometer with daily glucose data for the preceding 2 weeks, a formal blood test which includes HbA1c within 3 months and an eye report by an optometrist or ophthalmologist within the past 6 months.

Further information can be found on the official Transport Victoria website under Diabetes and Driving.
